Advances in catalysis are making fuel cells more efficient. Could the age of the internal combustion engine finally be over?
Fuel cells are serious contenders for replacing the internal combustion engine. Since they are based on electrochemical energy conversion, fuel cells achieve high efficiencies, which would help to reduce the consumption of primary energy and the emission of carbon dioxide. What makes them most attractive for transport applications is the fact that they emit zero or ultra-low emissions.[1]
