Dec. 20--Nearly 450 Celanese workers will lose their jobs as the textile chemical company continues to cut positions at its ailing Celriver plant on North Cherry Road.

Celanese AG, the plant's German parent, said Friday it will massively restructure its operations and eliminate the production of acetate filament in Rock Hill by the third quarter of 2001.

The change will eliminate about half of the plant's remaining 900 or so workers. Celanese, a cornerstone of the local economy for more than 50 years, employed 1,650 people just three years ago and was the largest industrial employer in York County.
