In a complex maneuver in April 1863 before the Battle of Chancellorsville, Union Gen. Joseph Hooker moved his powerful forces across the Rappahannock and Rapidan rivers to attack an unsuspecting Confederate army.

However, Hooker made a critical mistake before the fighting began. He sent his cavalry on a tactical mission, and thus relinquished his intelligence advantage. Without his eyes and ears in battle, he no longer could pinpoint the location of the enemy. As a result, Hooker let the outnumbered forces under Gen. Robert E. Lee gain the initiative - and the Union suffered a crushing defeat.
