Democratic fund-raiser Maria Hsia pleaded not guilty yesterday to charges she hid illegal campaign contributions made after a 1996 Democratic Party event attended by Vice President Al Gore at a California Buddhist temple.
U.S. District Judge Paul Friedman released Mrs. Hsia on a $50,000 bond and ordered her to surrender her passport. He scheduled trial for April 27.
"I have done nothing wrong, and I'm prepared to fight," she told reporters at the federal courthouse after her arraignment. Nancy Luque, her attorney, said the charges were based on a "legal and factual house of cards."
