Acting Justice Department civil rights chief Bill Lann Lee faced sharp questioning on Capitol Hill yesterday as he defended racial preferences as necessary "to have a country we can all be proud of."
"I hope we will come to a day when we don't need affirmative-action programs," Mr. Lee, head of the department's civil rights division, told a House subcommittee yesterday. "But I don't think that's going to happen too soon unless we have some major changes in the way people see this problem."
