Although Tuesday's elections held few surprises, Republicans yesterday declared victory.
By a wide margin, voters in California elected Mary Bono to replace her late husband, Rep. Sonny Bono, a Republican who died in a skiing accident. Voters in Milwaukee, meanwhile, picked state Rep. Mary Lazich to fill a vacant state Senate seat, giving the party control of the state legislature for the first time since 1993.
"Our victories in Wisconsin are an early vote of confidence in Gov. Tommy Thompson's welfare reform effort," Republican National Committee Chairman Jim Nicholson said in a press release.
