As a cross-cultural enterprise, the Universal Ballet has few peers in a dance world known for the varied backgrounds of its performers.
The goal of the Korean-based company is uniting the best of the Western ballet tradition with the talents of dancers who are mostly from the East. A few others come from Italy, Romania and Russia.
Leading dancer Julia Moon, who also is the company's general director, was born in McLean and has been with the Washington Ballet as well as with the Ohio Ballet.
In December 1989, she was the first Asian to perform as a guest principal with the Kirov Ballet of St. Petersburg.
