Style. Glamour. Glitz! The 150th anniversary of the publication of the Communist Manifesto is being celebrated in a manner that might well startle its authors, Karl Marx and Frederick Engels. The creative director of Barney's, Manhattan's high-fashion department store, feels, "People are forgetting the Gulag and Stalin and the negative imagery. So it could be time for Marxism to come back as pure style."
The marketing plan for the book, according to its publisher, Verso, is to produce an "upscale edition" of the revolutionary classic, "self-consciously marketed toward sybarites" including tie-ins with expensive boutiques in London and New York. Even the ...
