The D.C. government owes more than $4 million in unpaid medical bills, according to a private firm that began overseeing the city's disability compensation program this month.
Officials at Mell, Brownell & Baker, which took over the disability program on April 1, say the city routinely failed to pay hundreds of medical bills generated by its own workers, according to D.C. Council member Kathy Patterson, Ward 3 Democrat.
The city's disability compensation program pays medical bills for the District's more than 30,000 workers when they are injured on the job.
