DEFECTING GENERAL
Hundreds of Democratic officeholders have jumped to the Republican Party in recent years, but it is not every day that a party leader switches sides.
That is what happened in Georgia this week when Sonny Perdue, president pro tem of the state Senate, announced he was joining the Republicans.
The 51-year-old state senator, first elected in 1990, revealed his decision in an exclusive interview with Nancy Badertscher in the Macon Telegraph. He said it was based on conviction.
"I expect I'll be treated like a defecting North Korean general, vilified by some and welcomed as the hero by others," Mr. Perdue said.
