Woody Allen, before rejuvenating his movie career with last year's "Deconstructing Harry," agreed to cooperate with a documentary intrusion on certain aspects of his private life as he headlined a jazz concert tour of European cities in March 1996.
The estimable documentary filmmaker Barbara Kopple was invited to record this quixotic expedition, which committed Mr. Allen to the ordeal of 18 shows in 23 days. On the positive side, it promised a sustained immersion in his beloved avocation: playing clarinet in a small combo devoted to New Orleans-style jazz.
