NEW DELHI - Whatever their technical merits, India's nuclear tests have been a huge political success for Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's fragile 2-month-old government.
Despite news of sanctions from India's main trading partners including the United States, the surge of patriotic pride occasioned by the tests has rallied Indians of all stripes behind the nationalist government.
Even Muslims such as New Delhi shopkeeper Asif Meer Quadri were thrilled at the news of the five nuclear tests conducted Monday and Wednesday, oblivious to the fact than such weapons could be used against Muslim Pakistan where most of his family lives.
