"I knew nothing, I expected nothing," French film director Agnes Merlet says of her vocation during a phone interview to promote her new movie, "Artemisia."
Imported by Miramax, the film opens today at the Cineplex Odeon Outer Circle.
Miss Merlet, who is speaking from Seattle, has been persuaded to participate in a flurry of bicoastal promotion for "Artemisia," her second feature. It's a fervent, haunting evocation of a scandalous fragment of 17th-century art history and amorous biography, re-created with sumptuous intimacy and authority on a well-spent budget of about $7 million.
