OCEAN CITY - There's plenty of sand here to warm toes, bury uncles and foul a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.

But as Memorial Day weekend ushers in the start of beach season, there isn't as much sand lining the ocean here as there was a year ago.

A series of powerful storms battered the Eastern Seaboard during the winter, scraping sand from beaches up and down the coast, including Maryland's premier resort town.

Astute beach-goers peering at the Atlantic will notice a small shape on the horizon starting Monday, a testament to two storms that tore away chunks of beach in January and February.
