Poet A.E. Houseman should have waited a few months when he wrote: "Loveliest of trees, the cherry now is hung with blossoms on its boughs." The cherry tree is most splendid now, when the fruit fills its boughs and the bowls on our tables.
I saw a bin of what I thought were Bing cherries last week, but they may have been the early Chelan variety, for Bings from the Northwest Cherry Growers (the states of Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Utah) are available in markets from mid-June to mid-August.
Lamberts and Rainiers are shipped from the Northwest from late June to early or mid-August, and Lapins and Sweethearts are picked from mid-July to late August. ...
