Just 11 weeks into a six-month marathon, the Baltimore Orioles have all but conceded the American League East to the white-hot New York Yankees. They now talk in terms of the Boston Red Sox and the wild-card berth, a race in which they trail the Red Sox by seven games.
The more pertinent concern, however, is whether the Orioles have any business talking about the playoffs at all. If they play as they did while losing 20 of 35 games after a 10-2 start, they might as well go home now. But since snapping a nine-game losing streak, the Orioles have gone 11-7 while injecting a glimmer of light into what once looked like a $74 million train wreck.
