Tall, lithe, cigar-smoking George Gershwin was one of those aggravating people who could do anything, it seemed.

He wrote popular music. He composed rhapsodies. He painted. He dabbled in musical comedy. He took on operas.

"Gershwin was fun," says Timothy Rowe, who is coordinating "A Gershwin Centennial Celebration," a six-part Smithsonian Institution seminar beginning Tuesday. "Not only was he a brilliant composer of both light and serious American music, but you can't go away from a concert without walking a foot higher than when you walked in."
