But look closer and you see something else - a former outpost of open land and dairy farms transforming itself into one of the hottest growth areas in the Washington region.

Suddenly, this semirural county northwest of Washington isn't so far away. Houses have been built by the hundreds to accommodate a 1990s population spurt. Business development - retail, office, commercial and industrial - is following close behind.
