BALTIMORE - He was the American League's June Player of the Month, and his April and May weren't shoddy, either. Yet Baltimore Orioles first baseman Rafael Palmeiro yesterday found himself in the same position that he usually ends up in this time of year. Despite perhaps the best first half of his career, Palmeiro was passed over for the AL All-Star team.
Cleveland Indians manager Mike Hargrove, who will guide the AL team against the National League Tuesday in Denver, selected Mo Vaughn of the Boston Red Sox as the backup to elected starter Jim Thome. In 77 games entering last night, Vaughn was hitting .327 with 21 home runs and 56 RBI.
