CNN Chairman Tom Johnson issued an extraordinary on-air apology yesterday and retracted a broadcast report that the U.S. military in 1970 used the deadly nerve gas sarin in Laos and killed American defectors.
The admission brought immediate upheaval in CNN's newsroom. Pam Hill, vice president in charge of "NewsStand: CNN & Time," which aired the charges June 7, resigned. The segment's two producers, April Oliver and Jack Smith, were fired after declining to resign and standing by their report, CNN sources said.
And CNN is reprimanding its star correspondent, Peter Arnett, who narrated the broadcast, "Valley of Death," the sources said. The ...
