NEW ORLEANS - The president of the National Education Association yesterday urged members to seek unity with a longtime rival, the American Federation of Teachers, claiming that "vicious and well-orchestrated campaigns" by right-wing extremists were but a harbinger of things to come.
Bob Chase told NEA members in a dramatic keynote speech at the group's 136th annual convention here that the proposed merger with the AFT would result in the nation's largest labor union and would give the merged groups more focus, power and strength.
