* Charles Johnson was awarded the National Book Award in fiction for his work, The Middle Passage, about a freed slave's voyage to Africa on a ship bound to pick up new slaves. Johnson, who taught English at the University of Washington, was the fourth Black writer to win this award for fiction in its 40-year history.
