The South Florida megalopolis, we mean.
As urban regions go, metropolitan Miami and greater Fort Lauderdale are johnny-come-latelys.
As the millennium draws to a close, eternal cities like Rome may reflect on the changes of the last 1,000 years, but South Florida spent nine of the last 10 centuries largely uninhabited.
Which makes the economic achievements of the last 100 years here all the more phenomenal. Not unjustifiably was Miami nicknamed the Magic City -- for it's a miracle it ever got built. Paris, London and New York had culture, politics and commerce on their side.
