Dec. 27--When John Chambers, the chief executive officer of Cisco Systems was in the Cleveland area this fall, he was asked to predict the future of the Internet.

The question seemed appropriate because his company makes most of the equipment that handles information traffic, but he ducked the issue, saying he can't look more than a couple of years ahead. There are so many issues that can change, prediction is foolish.

Not everyone is so timid. John Maddox, a lecturer in theoretical physics at the University of Manchester in England, took a stab at prognostication in Scientific American.
