RUDI IS BACK
Politics was almost the death of Rudi Webster, the former ambassador from Barbados.
Mr. Webster, in a phone interview yesterday, recalled how his devotion to a friend almost cost him his life.
In 1994, he decided to take a break from diplomatic duties to help Gamini Dissayanake run for prime minister of Sri Lanka. The two men had been friends for years.
"We even planned the campaign in Barbados five years before," Mr. Webster said.
The diplomat arrived in Sri Lanka in the fall of that year, planning to stay for six weeks. He traveled everywhere with Mr. Dissayanake, accompanying him on election swings ...
