One of the major questions which has been of interest to researchers on family in India is whether the family structure is influenced by caste or class. Caste and family structures have been found to be related in several studies. Both Basu (1962: 88) and Sarma (1964: 200-201), for example, found a significantly higher proportion of joint families among high and middle castes than among low castes in the villages of Burdwan district of West Bengal.
