BANGKOK - "Anna and the King," the film that stars Jodie Foster and Chow Yun-Fat and updates the Broadway legend "The King and I," has opened all over the world in recent weeks. Yesterday, Thailand's censors banned it in that country.
In announcing the prohibition, members of the Thai Film Board complained that Mr. Chow wields his sword in a peasant manner and that Miss Foster is unbelievably forward in her relationship with the king.
Former Prime Minister Anand Panyarachun commented that ordinary Thais would fail to understand that aspects of the film were not real; consequently, they would lose respect for the monarchy.
