TOKYO - Washington's most important Pacific allies, Japan and South Korea, traded diplomatic blows yesterday over a group of barren islands that both of them claim.
No one expects the squabbling neighbors to begin shooting with real bullets for a prize consisting of about 300 square yards of rocks protruding from the middle of the Sea of Japan.
In fact, both sides have indicated they would rather sidestep the dispute altogether and instead negotiate a new treaty to regulate fishing in the surrounding waters.
