Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist dissents from the millennial reveling today to note in his year-end report the growth of federal courts in the 20th century - "which, I hasten to point out, has another year to run."
"Just ask the makers of `2001: A Space Odyssey,' " the traditionalist jurist said in a jibe at the multitudes who mark today as the dawn of the 21st century as well as a new millennium.
Courts have not changed as much as technology in the 99 years since the century began in the horse and buggy era, "but are nonetheless remarkable," Chief Justice Rehnquist says in a report released for publication at 12:01 a.m. today.
