Switzerland has many private and independent railway owners and operators. Among the largest of these is Bern Lotschberg Simplon Railway, which is set to expand its activities significantly during the next decade.
THE scheduled opening of the new Lotschberg base tunnel by early 2007 will provide a huge boost in traffic and revenue for Bern Lotschberg Simplon (BLS) Railway. But BLS is not merely resting on its laurels during the interim period. It is investing in new rolling stock and intends to become a bigger operator in the passenger and freight markets by capitalising on the gradual introduction of open access throughout the Swiss rail network.
