A first-time scuba diver found nearly five hours after disappearing off Salisbury Beach yesterday died after being rushed ashore in very critical condition, Coast Guard officials said.
"He was transported from the (Newburyport police) divers' boat to our 41-footer," said Coast Guard Lt. Shannon Brown. "He did not have any vital signs."
Ray Alexander, 28, of Atkinson, N.H., was found at 5:57 p.m., 207 yards from where his boat was anchored. He was not a certified diver, officials said.
