Prophylactic administration of fluconazole after liver transplantation reduces the rate of fungal infection, a fairly common consequence of posttransplant immunosuppressive therapy.
Drew Winston, MD and associates at the University of California in Los Angeles studied 212 liver transplant recipients given a single daily dose of fluconazole (400 mg) or placebo for 10 weeks following transplantation. Overall, proven fungal infections occurred in 45 of 104 placebo recipients (43%) but in just 10 of 108 fluconazole recipients (9%), the authors reported in the November 16 issue of the Annals of Internal Medicine.
