Fan Club
Dear Alfred:
My 2-year-old system has a 230-watt power supply with a noisy fan. At first, the noise problem only oc curr ed during startup, but now it is noisy all the time. Will a cleaning cure it? Can it be lubricated? Can I replace the fan without having to replace the power supply? Ron Joiner
Dear Ron:
It's almost certain that worn bearings are the cause of the racket, which means that the fan will fail sooner or later. When it does, the system will run hot, and if it runs hot enough, one or more components will fail - perhaps permanently.
