What is a 'forgotten' chemist? Several chemists who were obscure or disregarded in their own time are now well known, generally because they are hailed as forerunners of major developments. These include, for instance, Couper, for his work on structural formulae, Loschmidt, who proposed the benzene ring structure, and Newlands, for his periodic law of the elements. Obscure as they may have been, historians of chemistry and even some chemists have clearly not forgotten them.
