C&I's competition showed there's a very wide spread of views about who should be regarded as the 'Scientist of the Millennium'. Over 200 entrants submitted no fewer than 46 different suggestions for the top spot. And they nominated many others as their second and third choices.
A sign of the times: just over three-quarters of the entries came in by e-mail from all over the world.
To sort out who should be awarded the title 'Scientist of the Millennium', we allocated 5 points to each first choice, 3 points to each second choice and 1 point to each third choice. The total points for the top 32 candidates is shown below.
