Jan. 14--The face of AIDS has changed. The epidemic once identified with white gay men now affects more black and Hispanic gay men, a report released Thursday shows.
In 1998, 52 percent of gay men with AIDS were minorities. While the infection rate among gay men overall has dropped, the decline has been sharpest among whites. Now, for the first time, the number of newly infected black and Hispanic gay men exceeds the number of white gay men.
"The tragedy here is that this did not have to happen," said Phill cq Wilson, director of the African-American AIDS Policy and Training Institute at the University of Southern California.
