"Sunset Boulevard" at the Wang Theatre, Boston, through Jan. 16.
Billy Wilder's "Sunset Boulevard" is a brilliant film indictment of Hollywood's singular focus on superficiality and excess. And on Broadway, the staging of the Andrew Lloyd Webber/Don Black/Christopher Hampton musical version faithfully re-created the tension between the decadent 1920s Hollywood and the bitter film noir atmosphere of the late '40s.
But somehow, the "Sunset Boulevard" that opened at the Wang Theatre Wednesday night was missing all the dramatic tension and kept only the superficiality.
