It's easy to imagine James DePreist as the Supreme Court justice he might be today if he'd stuck to his original ambition and become a lawyer. A large man with a perfectly shaped, dark bald head and an immaculately trimmed gray beard, DePreist commands immediate attention and respect the way a judge - or, for that matter, general or president - might. But, he says, "I realized, fortunately before going to law school, that I didn't want to be a lawyer."
Instead, music became his life. And now DePreist, 63, the music director since 1980 of the Oregon Symphony, commands attention and respect as one of America's foremost conductors.
