In 1997 Turkish director Ferzan Ozpetek announced his arrival onto the world stage with his critically acclaimed first feature Haman (Turkish Bath). His latest film Harem Suare, which recently premiered in London at the city's annual film festival, looks set to further enhance his growing reputation. This beautifully crafted tale of the life of a young woman living inside the Sultans harem at the end of the Ottoman empire may displease some but it is a heartfelt tribute to the courage of those women who found themselves caught between two worlds, that of the feudal past and the encroaching future.
