Jan. 19--DENVER--Colorado legislators Tuesday told the Department of Corrections to slow down and consult them before relying too much on private prisons to house state inmates.
"My concern is we don't know what you're doing," Sen. Dottie Wham, R-Denver, who chairs the Capital Development Committee, advised John Suthers, the department director.
Under an obscure 1994 law, the department was supposed to send only minimum-security inmates to private prisons but in fact has sent higher-risk medium-security convicts there, as well.
