Article: Ivory Coast President Henri Bedie Ousted In Military Coup; Flees Country.(Brief Article)

In a striking blow to democracy, Ivory Coast President Henri Konan Bedie recently was ousted from office in a largely bloodless coup led by former army chief Gen. Robert Guei. Bedie fled his country two days after the revolt in a plane provided by France, his main foreign supporter.

Bedie had sought refuge at a French military base in Abidjan, Ivory Coast's political center, the French Foreign Ministry said in a statement, before leaving for nearby Lome, Togo, accompanied by about 10 family members. A Togolese official said Bedie was accepted in the country on "humanitarian grounds" but would probably leave in a few days for an as-yet-unannounced destination.
