Jan. 26--Alvah H. Chapman Jr., former chairman and chief executive of Knight Ridder, is retiring from the board of directors after a career that spanned 40 years.
Chapman, 78, won't stand for re-election when his three-year term ends. He will leave the board at Knight Ridder's annual meeting in April.
"It's been 10 years since I've been an active officer in the company," said Chapman, who stepped down as Knight Ridder chairman in October 1989. "I'll be 79 years old in March and I think it's inappropriate to serve on a board of a company of this type when I'm in my 80s."
