Jan. 27--Knight Ridder's former chairman, Alvah H. Chapman Jr., a key player in the building of the media company, is retiring from the company's 10-person board when his term expires in April.
Chapman, who resigned as Knight Ridder's chairman in 1989, said he "thought it was unwise to continue serving 10 years after leaving as an active officer."
Chapman, 78, added that it was time to make room for younger people to serve Knight Ridder, the parent company of the Mercury News. "The KR board deserves people who are younger and more experienced with how business is practiced today."
