Bayer AG's $2450-million acquisition of Lyondell Chemical Co.'s polyol business, takes the German firm to yet higher dominance of the polyurethanes market, with a share approaching one third of the global business. At its 17 Nov. press conference the firm claimed to supply a quarter of the isocyanates used in the sector worldwide, over 1200 kilotonnes, saying that the deal adds 700 kt to its existing polyol capacity around the world--estimated at 500 kt--giving a total PU chemical capacity of about 2400 kt, over 31 percent of the global business.
But, as noted in the main story, the firm is confident that the deal will gain approval from the various competition ...
