Threat of closure hangs over North Carolina foam plants

RALEIGH, NORTH CAROLINA--Foam plants in North Carolina have been threatened with fines of up to $10 000 per day and possible closure if their TDI (toluene diisocyanate) emissions continue to exceed state limits.

The state's Department of Air Quality (DAQ) has given four plants--Carpenter Comfort Cushioning, NC Foam Industries, Vitafoam and Vita Olympic--six months to cut TDI emissions to below a permitted level of 0.2 microgrammes per cubic centimetre.
