Virginia's Route 7, or Leesburg Pike, may be one of the oldest state-sanctioned highways in North America and, these days, also one of the most booming. The historic turnpike started as a path for bringing buffalo into the area and served as an Indian trail.
Later, large wooden barrels, or hogsheads, filled with about 300 pounds of tobacco would be rolled down the road from Leesburg to the Alexandria docks. Today, there are numerous new-home developments, busy construction sites and cranes silhouetted against the sky all along the pike.
