Jan. 27--A railroad proposal to increase train speeds in Puyallup has been sidetracked temporarily.
The Washington Utilities and Transportation Commission has postponed a decision on train speeds in Puyallup to study whether the increased vibrations from faster trains would cause wet, soft Puyallup soils to give way and possibly cause a derailment disaster in the city of 30,000 people.
State utilities officials also will test soil stability near the Burlington Northern Santa Fe line in the Green River Valley, but the BNSF line in Puyallup is the main concern, said Mike Rowswell, rail section manager for the utilities commission.
