The Czech Republic - taken to task for the porosity of its borders to clandestine immigration in the 1998 report on border controls under the Convention applying the Schengen Agreement (see European Report No 2461) - acknowledged in a recent report to the EU Council of Ministers that it remained the country of transit for the majority of illegal migrants. The highest number of illegal migrants is still being detected at the Czech Republic's border with Germany (61% in 1999 compared with 74% in 1998).
