Conflicting reports from the 1874 expedition to the Black Hills, lead by Lieutenant Colonel George A. Custer, created speculation and conjecture over the mineral resources in the region. However, reports of gold became the focus of national attention. These accounts brought a rush of miners to the hills and lead to further scientific study, primarily to substantiate the reports of mineral wealth reported by the Custer expedition.
