Ian MacNiven's long-awaited biography of Lawrence Durrell has finally appeared. It represents the work of virtually a whole professional lifetime. In its preface, MacNiven locates the beginning of his project in 1970 while he was working on the Durrell papers recently purchased by the University of Southern Illinois at Carbondale.
